Autism and the Biochemical Approach

Autism rates have risen dramatically in industrialized countries around the world. Despite the large body of research into the metabolic aspects of Autism led by Carl Pfeiffer and Abram Hoffer, mainstream medicine is still largely unaware of available investigations and treatment protocols for Autism and other common conditions.

The biochemistry and toxicology of Autism has been investigated in many centres around the globe and explained at regular conferences such as DAN! (Defeat Autism Now). One hundred percent of cases demonstrate abnormal biochemistry. The patterns of low and high nutrient levels and the presence of toxic metals as seen on hair analysis, urine testing and faecal testing can help create a customized regimen for Autism sufferers. Cost effective (and child friendly) treatments are prescribed are then re-evaluated with biochemical testing at regular intervals. This is a particularly useful method because it deals with the fundamental cause of the developmental delays. It is a proactive, scientific approach.

ASD (Autism spectrum disorder) can be depicted graphically as an interruption to the interaction of three cogs - the brain, digestion and immunity. The interactions are not unique to Autism; it is just that they have been better defined in this condition.

In terms of "levels", there are two basic observations. In one individual we find both low and high levels of things. But again this is not unique to Autism. It is common to all forms of chronic poisoning.

The generation of symptoms is believed to be related to these high and low levels and to the resultant chaos that such a situation creates.

The second observation is that the severity of Autism symptoms reduces substantially when wheat and dairy are excluded from the diet. This suggests that Autism patients are "reacting" to something in these foods.

When we put these observations together we can see that the bulk of the data collected so far fits into these categories. I developed a method of analysis and treatment called Diagnostic Orthomolecular Medicine (DOM). This method works by interconnecting the information from disparate scientific disciplines and explains the mechanisms that drive biochemistry from normal to abnormal.

The DOM approach would be to analyze what process is "pushing" these things out of range.

This information, as well as locally derived data, has helped us create a protocol that is relatively cost effective.

The sequence is:

  1. Fix the digestive tract from mouth to colon,
  2. Improve liver function,
  3. Improve antioxidant levels generally, and finally
  4. Remove toxins from the body.

Only when steps 1, 2 and 3 have been completed is there any point in moving to step 4 (a point missed by many DIY protocols and Natural Therapists alike).

The better the mechanism of how the Autism occurred is elucidated, the better the response rate. This method only corrects the biochemistry; it does not create normal children overnight. Parental and educational input is vital to help the child catch up.

Patience and persistence are the keys to success. There is no "magic pill".
